180,000 people in Germany suffer from gambling addiction: Addiction Yearbook 2018

According to the 2018 Addiction Yearbook of the German Centre for Addiction Issues (DHS), in addition to alcohol, tobacco and drugs, pathological gambling is one of the primary research areas. In comparison to the previous year, gambling-related illnesses were almost equally frequent.

Gambling addiction and other gambling-related disorders were listed far behind other addictions in the Yearbook. However, problems with alcohol or nicotine are much more socially understood, and currently acceptable, than those with gambling.

A study found that even children and adolescents often have experience with gambling. One in three students in Berlin has participated in gambling on the Internet.

The incidence of gambling addiction is approximately stable. The number of people who suffer from a pathological clinical picture has fallen by around 35,000 compared to the previous year.

However, among those who visited a counselling centre in 2017/2018, 72.3% were gamblers. These still represent the largest group.
