Loutraki is not the only casino that has not been paying its staff on time. Apparently, the Porto Rio Casino in Patras, Greece has been delinquent in paying its staff due to low revenues. The staff have become so frustrated by the owner’s inability to pay them that they took matters into their own hands.
Approximately a dozen staff, accompanied by senior members of the union, PAME, entered the cash desk and removed the money that was owed to all of the staff. It appears that the amount in the cash desk was insufficient to cover what was due (as a gesture of good will they did leave €1,000), so they emptied the bill acceptors on some of the slot machines. Casinos in Greece are required to carry a certain amount of cash on the premises and also reserves in the bank in order to operate.
Despite the fact the casino has been in violation of this requirement, to date the Greek Gambling Commission has taken no action.
