Bern: Three committees looking for a new gambling law

Three committees have proposed a referendum opposing the new gambling law in Switzerland and have collected 65,000 signatures so far.

The new law, approved by the federal parliament last September, will only allow online real money gaming to be provided by domestic operators. Foreign casinos are prohibited from operating real money gaming online.

The lotteries are unaffected.

For the opponents of the law, one thing is clear: this amounts to Internet censorship, and exactly one economic sector gets the best of it – domestic casino operators.

Whether the restrictions included in these new laws are desired by the public or not will be decided by Swiss voters on January 18th. For many involved, fighting these laws is as much about protecting against “digital isolation” as it is about gambling specifically. They don’t want to see a precedent set.
