In the intervening months, Barnett, a chef in her 18th year at the casino, has tightened her belt and kept a closer eye on the bottom line. “You just have to say, ‘This is what I’ve got, this is what’s got to go out, this is what’s left’,” she said. While a $2,000 monthly payment from the federal government has softened the blow of a lengthy layoff, Barnett would rather be working and earning a living again. “It’s kind of food for the soul,” she said.
