New York State can help casinos, but must not bail them out By Poughkeepsie Journal Editorial Board August 22, 2018 at 12:27 pm At first blush, the numbers are awful. The so-called “Resorts World Catskills” – the massive $1.2 billion destination at the old Concord resort in Sullivan County – has gotten off to a terrible start. In fact, it took a $58 million loss in the first six months of the year, including $37 million in the last three months. Ouch. But this sprawling project isn’t completed and ultimately will feature an entertainment village, an indoor waterpark lodge and golf course, among other amenities. Creating such a diverse destination might prove key to its survival over time. That’s particularly true when you consider that several other upstate casinos also are below revenue projections after winning a competitive process for gaming licenses.
