Gambling or chocolate addiction in Cologne?

Is a Cologne retirement home’s bingo evening “illegal gambling”? Due to uncertainty surrounding this exact concern, the SBK (Social Enterprises of Cologne) recently banned the bingo event at their Riehler homesteads. This was confirmed by SBK lawyer Anna Margarete Seelentag. However, the Express feels this is not about money, but (mostly) about chocolate.

Social and Health Department Professor Harald Rau stated that “this is, at best, about chocolate addiction, but not about gambling addiction, which should not be underestimated even in old age,” and thinks it is right that the matter has been judicially tested.

However, City Director and Councillor Stephan Keller quickly found a solution for the bingo fans in retirement homes. The SBK – and all other old people’s homes – would only have to inform the Cologne City Office of Ordinance about the exact dates of the bingo events. The permits would then be issued without further bureaucratic red tape.
