Illegal gambling in Germany on the rise

Gambling is booming in Germany. The entire German gambling market grew by 8% in 2015. However, a study nonetheless shows that illegal gambling in this country, as well as previously unauthorized online real money games, are on the rise faster than the regulated market.

The overall 8% increase is broadly due to serious expansion of the unregulated market, according to an industry analysis by the Handelsblatt Research Institute. In Germany, the gambling market is divided into a state-regulated and a non-regulated as well as a “black market”. The market volume of unauthorized offers is currently increasing by around 30% annually.

From 2014 to 2015 the German gambling market generated gross gaming revenues of 13 billion euros. Although the state-regulated market was still the largest segment with gross gaming revenues of € 10.4 billion, the unregulated market has been observed to grow much faster in recent years.
