John Bel Edwards said Wednesday (May 16) that Louisiana should consider legalizing sports betting, but the issue will have to wait until next year.“Certainly we should look at it,” the governor said during his monthly radio show.The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that sports betting can be legalized in all states, not just Nevada. Mississippi had passed a law to legalize sports betting weeks ago, in anticipation of the Supreme Court ruling.The Louisiana Legislature, however, has already killed its own proposal to allow legal sports betting — also introduced weeks ago. Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner, had authored the bill, which was killed in the Senate Finance Committee. Several of its members are opposed to any gambling expansion in Louisiana.
