MGM Resorts International said Saturday it repaired an embarrassing mix-up that cost a customer at the MGM National Harbor in Maryland a large slot machine jackpot.

In a statement Saturday, a company spokesman said the casino paid the undisclosed jackpot to Maryland resident Cynthia Obie. The customer lost thousands of dollars when an MGM National Harbor employee mistakenly transposed one digit in her social security number on the jackpot forms required by the state.

The social security number entered belonged to a person who owed back child support, so the money went to satisfy that claim.

The story was first reported by Fox5 News in Washington D.C. The casino said couldn’t pay, based on Maryland gaming regulations and state law, even though the property was at fault.

“We worked with the state of Maryland to rectify this situation and visited Ms. Obie Saturday morning to provide her with her winnings,” MGM said in a statement. “We apologized once again for the inconvenience and invited Ms. Obie back to MGM National Harbor to ensure she has the very best experience at our resort.”

Initially, MGM called the error “unfortunate” but said that National Harbor “could not provide an additional payout.”
