In the town of Bingen and the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden, 75% of the population see the legalisation and regulation of online gambling in Germany as a chance to increase the efficient protection of minors. Almost two thirds see legalization as an opportunity to protect those who have poor control over their gaming behaviour, while 70% consider that legitimate providers would be more recognizable on the condition that they were legalized. In general, an increase in measures to protect minors in online gambling is rated by 92% of respondents as a good idea.

Currently in Germany the government does not provide any online casino licenses. There are only a few exceptions in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein which are restricted. Online players are thus at high risk of being liable to prosecution. For the study, a total of 1,001 online interviews were collected.
