OPINION: I was shocked to see ads for gambling on Bake Off — we need new rules James Kirkup, The Evening Standard · October 15, 2020 at 6:39 pm Watching the Great British Bake Off this week, I suddenly realised that GBBO is the only bit of British terrestrial TV I now see: the rest is all Netflix and Amazon. (Sorry, BBC.) What made me realise this was the ad breaks, which Channel Four naturally crams into its top show to raise cash. And those ads pointed me to a big issue that politicians need to get a better grip on, and soon: online gambling. At some points during this season’s Bake Off, entire ad breaks have been filled with spots for online gambling firms. The fact that the gambling industry has the means to block-buy some of the most expensive slots on domestic TV says a lot about its size and wealth. When many people, and especially people in politics, hear the word “gambling”, they tend to think of grim bookies’ shops on battered high streets, or maybe glitzy casinos.
