Spain: Online sportsbooks will not be able to advertise during children’s hours

The Spanish government, in an effort to impose stronger restrictions on advertisements for online betting, including sports, poker and casino games, recently published a decree aiming to prevent the appearance of these ads during children’s TV schedule as well as aimed at limiting them as part of live television or radio broadcasts.

The new regulations look very demanding. In gambling advertisements they further prohibit the appearance of people or characters with public relevance, whether real or fictional, who may be attractive to minors.

The CNMC yesterday gave its approval to the regulation’s draft, but added some details. The draft recommends that the message “play responsibly” must be included within the adverts broadcast at some point. CNMC advises that it be visible at all times during the advert.

The profile of gambling addicts has changed in Spain, and now young people between 18 and 25, students and the unemployed are at increased risk of falling into this category. The government aims to tackle the problem.
