Sports betting changes in Austria

There are constant legal challenges in the betting arena. Only a few years ago, the German SPD launched a decisive legal action to curb the number of local bookmakers and actively oppose illegal gambling.

Now apparently it is also Austria’s turn, because the new Austrian government is planning to legalize online sports betting. This would be a consistent solution to plug a legal loophole that has existed for years. The government program aims to include sports betting providers henceforth within the category of gambling.

Austria has been hard on online providers, because the country has not yet defined this type of betting as a game of chance, as other European countries have. Local betting offices are expected to undergo profound changes.

For the state, the legalization of sports betting will have some advantages, above all bringing in more tax revenue.
