Spokespeople for the horse track, where 600 gaming machines arrived last week from Nevada, are referring to the machines as “slots-like” — not “slots.” Most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Money goes in. Buttons are pushed. Reels start rolling — a whirl of music and lights and images like fur coats, yachts and stacks of cash. Players hope against the odds that it all ends on a lucky configuration and coughs up a payout.
