Wisconsin: Oneida Nation ceremony prays for healing after casino shooting

Oneida Nation spiritual and cultural leaders held a traditional tobacco-burning and smudging ceremony Wednesday at the Radisson Hotel to help start the healing process for employees after a deadly shooting Saturday night.

“We’re remembering that whenever we have challenging times, as we all had in the last few days, it affects all of us because we are family,” said Artley Skenandore, Oneida cultural leader. “We need that healing and that’s why we’re gathering our fire and putting it back together with tobacco.”

Police said a former co-worker shot and killed Ian J. Simpson, 32, and Jacob T. Bartel, 35, and seriously injured Danny Mulligan, 28, in an attack that started about 7:30 p.m.
